Valparaiso University Faculty Artists Series – Duo fantaisie en Echo – The Nymphs of the Rhine
Duesenberg Recital Hall, Valparaiso University, Valparaiso, IN
Sunday, November 1, 2009 3:00PM
Leaving his home of Amsterdam, Johann Schenck arrived in Düsseldorf in 1696 at the court of Elector Palatine Johann Wilhelm, establishing a court in artistic rivalry of Versailles palace in France. Surrounded by musicians drawn from many surrounding countries, such as the renown castrato Baldassari and lutanist Sylvius Weiss, Schenck’s music is a synthesis of French, German and Italian styles. Exemplifying this cosmopolitan style, Le Nymphe di Rheno, per due viole di gamba sole, Op.8 (the Nymphs of the Rhine for two solo violas da gamba) was composed in between 1697 and 1706. Le Nymphe di Rheno includes twelve sonatas, or suites for two viols that include sonatas da camera (chamber sonatas that follow dance suite style) and sonatas da chiesa (church sonatas). In this performance 2 Sonatas from Le Nymphe di Rheno are paired with 2 solo Sonatas from the Vienna Manuscript.
